Residents of of Rodmersham, Bapchild and Teynham are facing significant changes as plans for thousands of new homes are proposed. Concerns have arisen about the transformation into a "housing estate," especially following Labour leaders Sir Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner's push for 1.5 million new homes.
The National Planning Policy Framework aims to meet this goal, requiring councils to build 370,000 homes annually and identify less vital green belt land for development. Rodmersham, home to 275 residences near Sittingbourne, is slated for 8,400 new homes in a ‘garden village’ that would include schools and a hotel. This initiative seeks to address the housing crisis, create jobs, and improve local infrastructure, though it has raised anxiety about increased traffic, resource strain, and environmental impacts.
Initially set for a local council decision in November, the Housing Secretary, Angela Rayner, has since taken over the decision-making process, escalating resident concerns. As the government prepares to rule on these plans, community voices need to be heard during this pivotal moment.
